India’s Energy Overview presents key highlights from India’s Energy sector, bringing together the latest updates on electricity capacity and generation mix, renewable energy additions, fuel and electricity demand-supply trends, electric mobility, and policy developments. It serves as a consolidated resource to track how the sector is evolving, offering a clear view of ongoing shifts in the energy landscape and supporting an informed understanding of India’s energy transition.
Key Highlights from Financial Year 2025-26
- India’s total electricity generating capacity reached 533 GW as of March 2026, consisting of coal with the highest share of 43%, followed by solar with 28%, wind with 11%, and large hydro with 10%, and the remaining 8% from other sources.
- India surpassed its 2030 NDC target five years ahead of schedule, achieving 50% non-fossil-based electricity installed capacity in June 2025. Building on this momentum, the country further raised its climate ambition with NDC 3.0 in March 2026, committing to 60% non-fossil installed power capacity by 2035, with the non-fossil share reaching 53% as of March 2026.
- In 2025-26, India recorded a historic addition of 54.6 GW renewable energy capacity (including large hydro), marking an 85% increase over RE capacity addition from last year.
- In total RE capacity addition this year, solar dominated with 44.6 GW (82%), followed by 6.1 GW (11%) from wind, while large hydro and other sources contributed 3.7 GW and 0.3 GW, respectively.
- The fossil fuel generation share in total generation dropped from 75% in 2024-25 to 71% in 2025-26 and in contrast, non-fossil generation share increased from 25% to 29% in the same period.
- In 2025-26, India’s peak electricity demand was recorded in January 2026, a winter month, hitting 245 GW.
- The peak demand deficit decreased from 1.4% in 2023-24 to 0.0% in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
- India’s total EV registrations reached 8.4 million by 31st March 2026. A 41% increase on last year’s cumulative registrations.
- In 2025-26, a total of 2.4 million EV were registered, which is 8% of the total vehicle registered in the same year. Most of the EV registration was in 2w and 3 w categories with 1.4 million and 0.8 million vehicle registration respectively.
- Tripura, with 18% EV registration, had the highest EV adoption rate among Indian states, followed by Assam, with 16%, and Delhi with 13%.
