Supporting India’s Evolving Power Sector

Strengthening the Backbone of India’s Energy Systems through Evidence and Insights

Strengthening the Backbone of India’s Energy Systems through Evidence and Insights

India runs on a power system now serving over 1.4 billion people, one of the largest and fastest-growing in the world. Under the National Electricity Plan (2023-2032), India plans to invest ₹ 9.15 lakh crore to expand transformation capacity from 1,251 to 2,342 gigavolt-amperes and inter-regional transfer capacity from 119 to 168 gigawatts by 2032. How the sector delivers on this scale, and reforms the utilities that distribute it, will shape the country’s economic future.

Where We Come In
Vasudha Foundation works to close this gap between capacity and delivery. Our partnership with NITI Aayog on the India Climate and Energy Dashboard puts real-time energy and climate data in one place for the first time.

Our regional DISCOM studies, across the Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Central regions, track how India’s distribution utilities are performing and where reform is most needed. Our work on peak demand and the Power Outlook Series helps the sector plan ahead rather than react.

India Climate and Energy Dashboard

The India Climate and Energy Dashboard (ICED) is an open-source platform that provides comprehensive and historical India’s energy and climate data. It provides single-window access to integrated government datasets and near real-time insights, enabling policymakers, researchers, academia, and industry to track India’s clean energy transition and monitor progress towards climate goals.

Publications

Our publications explore the evolving dynamics of energy systems, highlighting challenges and opportunities across policy, markets, infrastructure, and institutions. They combine technical expertise with accessible analysis, serving as a knowledge backbone for policymakers, regulators, researchers, and industry leaders.
