Event Summary: Launch of the Carbon Neutral Kerala 2050 Report

On this World Environment Day (June 5, 2026), the Government of Kerala officially launched the Carbon Neutral Kerala 2050 (CN50) Pathways Report, developed by Vasudha Foundation in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change. This Report outlines a comprehensive roadmap for the state of Kerala to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The report was launched by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri V. D. Satheesan in the presence of Shri Sunny Joseph, Minister for Electricity, Environment, Parliamentary Affairs and ANERT; Shri K. Muraleedharan, Minister for Health, Food Safety and Devaswoms; senior government officials, technical experts, and other stakeholders.

The CN50 report builds upon Kerala’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Emissions Assessment, launched in 2024, and represents the next phase of the state’s climate planning efforts. Developed through extensive technical analysis and stakeholder engagement, the report presents sector-specific decarbonisation pathways to support Kerala’s transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future, with a vision of achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050, and 100% Renewable Energy Supply by 2040

In his address, Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri V. D. Satheesan reaffirmed Kerala’s commitment to becoming a carbon-neutral state by 2050 and highlighted the need for collective action across government, institutions, and communities. He emphasised that climate action must go hand in hand with sustainable development and resilience-building, particularly in the face of increasing climate risks and environmental challenges.

The launch was followed by a technical session presenting the report’s key findings and recommendations. The analysis demonstrates how Kerala can achieve carbon neutrality through ambitious interventions across energy, transport, industry, buildings, forestry, agriculture, and waste sectors.

The development process of this report included four major stakeholder consultations, multiple engagements with line departments, and several rounds of technical review by the DoECC and other government departments. The active involvement of the DoECC throughout the assessment and review process helped strengthen the technical robustness of the report while ensuring broad institutional ownership of the proposed pathways.

During the event, Vasudha Foundation was felicitated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister in recognition of its technical contributions to the development of the Carbon Neutral Kerala 2050 Pathways Report.

The launch marks an important milestone in Kerala’s climate journey and provides an evidence-based framework to guide the state’s transition towards carbon neutrality while advancing sustainable development and resilience objectives.
